WOODVILLE — Franklin County and Wilkinson County squared off in a high-powered game, but Franklin County won 49-24 despite Wilkinson County out-gaining the Bulldogs in total yards on offense.
The Wildcats had 439 yards of offense, on 126 rushing yards and 313 passing yards. The Bulldogs tallied 419 yards of total offense, on 291 rushing yards and 128 passing yards.
Bulldogs head coach Trent Hammond said he was pleased with the effort given by his players, though he would have liked to seen less mental errors.
“We turned the ball over and had some penalties that killed us,” Hammond said. “I’m happy we scored, but I’m not happy with leaving points on the field.”
Hammond singled out the Wildcats’ Devin Fosselman as someone who gave his team fits.
“It was stressful trying to run him down,” Hammond said. “Wilkinson County’s got a good player in Fosselman. He proved to be a little too much for us at times.”
Darnell Ford got things started for the Bulldogs with a 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Dehendret Collins added a touchdown in the first on a 34-yard catch.
In the second, Fosselman got the Wildcats’ first touchdown on a 25-yard reception. The Bulldogs answered with a Milton Griffin 34-yard touchdown run.
With 5:11 to go before halftime, Fosselman again scored on a 5-yard catch. The Bulldogs got one more touchdown before the half on a 14-yard catch by Collins with 42 second left.
In the fourth quarter, Franklin County scored three touchdowns. The first one came on a Ladarrius Hunt 42-yard fumble return. Griffin added a 25-yard touchdown run and quarterback Edward McGee tallied a 2-yard touchdown carry.
Wilkinson County scored twice in the fourth, one on a 66-yard catch from Fosselman and the other on a 66-yard run by Brandon Hawthorn.
Wilkinson County assistant coach Steve Davis complimented his players for giving 100 percent on the field.
“We played hard tonight,” Davis said. “Our kids gave it all they had. They executed our game plan well. Defensively, we have to get a little bit tougher.
“Franklin County came out and played Franklin County football. Coach Hammond has an excellent team.”
