Huntington looking to win a few more

FERRIDAY — Huntington School’s game last Friday against Glenbrook School was one to forget, as the Hounds lost 53-7.

Huntington head coach Chad Harkins said last Friday was simply a matter of being overmatched.

“We got beat,” Harkins said. “There’s not much to say about that one (otherwise). We had a tough night. We just didn’t have the manpower to match up with them.”

This schedule gets somewhat easier for the Hounds the last few games of their season, as they are set to take on teams that are more their size, said Harkins.

Next up for Huntington (1-6) is CENLA Christian Academy, which the Hounds will play host to Friday.

“They’re a team that likes to spread it out a good bit and throw it around,” Harkins said.

“They had a decent running back, but he hurt his knee a few weeks ago. From what we’ve seen the last four or five film studies, they’ll line up four or five wide receivers and throw it about 30 to 40 times a game.”

The game against CENLA is one of three games Huntington will play at home out of its remaining four.

“It’s always an advantage to play in front of your home crowd and not have to deal with the hassle of traveling,” Harkins said. “Glenbrook was three hours away, so it’s definitely a positive to get back home and play.”

Harkins has been stressing improved play to his players for the remainder of the season, and said he felt his team could have done better in that regard last week.

“I feel like we didn’t take many steps forward last Friday,” Harkins said. “Hopefully we can have a good week of practice and execute a little better on both sides of the ball.”

Harkins also said he hopes those improvements would translate to a couple more wins on the season.

“It’s going to be a tough task to get those wins,” Harkins said.

“We’d love to get a couple of wins before the end of the season. If we can do that, it can help to build confidence and show that the things we’re working on are working and will work. That’d be important to take into the offseason, into spring ball and into next year.”

For Huntington, however, it’s first things first: It will have to find a way to shut down CENLA’s quick-hit offense and put some points on the board Friday.

“I think we need to hold onto the ball and make sure not to turn it over,” Harkins said. “They throw a lot of quick passes, which makes it tough to get pressure on their quarterback, so we’re going to have to do a good job in coverage on the short, intermediate routes.”
