NATCHEZ — Some major decisions have simple answers.
Yes or no — that’s the decision citizens of Adams County have to make when it comes to the recreation referendum issue that appears on the Nov. 3 sheriff ballot.
In an effort to educate voters about their options concerning the referendum, the Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a public referendum forum at the Natchez Convention Center at 6 p.m. Oct. 19.
“It’s basically an informational session to answer questions on recreation and to explain what a non-binding referendum is,” Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Debbie Hudson said. “It’s for people to hear about plans for recreation and then to ask any questions.”
Hudson said the panel is made up of people of different ages and races from city and county government and the private sector who will share their different opinions about the referendum and how it would affect their businesses and communities.
Stephanie Hutchins, who serves on the Legislative Committee of the Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce, said she hopes those present at Monday night’s forum will leave with a better understanding of how their votes of “yes” or “no” will affect the county.
“We are very well aware of the fact there is a lot of concern on who is going to build it, is it going to be maintained, is it going to be all inclusive to all facets of our community,” Hutchins said. “And there is concern on what it’s going to do to tax rates in the county.”
Hutchins said the decision made by voters on Nov. 3 will set the stage for the future of the county.
“A ‘yes’ vote doesn’t mean they are going to start construction on this thing tomorrow,” Hutchins said. “All it means is that we can move forward with plans to eventually bring it to vote on the actual construction.
“If you vote ‘no,’ there’s no chance, and this is a chance we have for economic development, so please consider it carefully,” Hutchins said.
