CENTREVILLE — Even though Centreville tried several kinds of defense, including a triangle-and-2, to slow down Tip McKenzie and Luke Whitaker, nothing seemed to work at all.
That was until head coach Jason Horne decided to go to a 2-3 zone in the fourth quarter, which paid off dividends as the Tigers rallied from a four-point deficit to defeat the WCCA Rams 65-55 Tuesday night in the MAIS District 5-AA opener for both teams.
“McKenzie kept beating us to the basket and off the dribble and Whitaker was hitting 3s,” Horne said. “That kept them at bay.”
Centreville (5-3, 1-0) ended up scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter while WCCA was held to just seven points. Both McKenzie and Whitaker ended up with 16 points for the Rams.
Horne said that the difference in the outcome was the play of seniors Colby Lockwood and Jamie Dezendorf, who scored 27 and 21 points, respectively for the Tigers.
“They stepped it up in the fourth quarter,” Horne said.
WCCA (0-1 in district play) trailed by nine points at the end of the first quarter, only to outscore Centreville 18-14 in the second quarter to trail by five at halftime and 19-10 in the third quarter.
Vidalia 92, Pineville 60
PINEVILLE, La. — Torrey Dixon finished with a game-high 28 points and Gary Stewart poured in 24 points as the Class 3A Vidalia Vikings went on the road and stunned the Class 5A Pineville Rebels Tuesday night.
Vidalia got off to a strong start in the first quarter and by the time the quarter was done, the Vikings had a 27-17 lead. The second quarter was more of the same and there was little Pineville could do to slow down Vidalia. By halftime, the Vikings took a commanding, and somewhat surprising, 47-29 lead.
The Rebels stayed right in there with the Vikings in the third quarter, but they were still outscored 21-17. Vidalia (8-3) finished off Pineville with a 24-14 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Quartrell Thomas chipped in with 18 points for the Vikings. Daniel Piper scored 23 points to lead Pineville (5-3), but he was the only Rebels player to score in double figures.
Terry 66, Natchez High 63
TERRY — Trevon Chatman scored 28 points to lead Natchez High, but it was not enough as the visiting Bulldogs could not hold on to a six-point halftime lead and lost to the host Bulldogs in Division 6-6A action Tuesday night.
It looked like Natchez High (5-5, 0-2) had the momentum on its side after holding Terry to just nine points in the second quarter en route to a 31-25 halftime lead. Terry started its rally in the third quarter and trailed by just one point at the end of that quarter.
Then Terry outscored Natchez High 21-17 in the fourth quarter to escape with the victory.
Jeremy McMorris had 14 points and Brandon Holden added 10 points for Natchez High.
Trinity Episcopal 84, Chamberlain-Hunt 46
PORT GIBSON — Kent King and L.J. Trimble each scored 21 points and Givonni Dent had a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds as the Saints won their MAIS District 6-A opener Tuesday night.
Trinity Episcopal (3-1, 1-0) jumped out to a 24-13 lead after one quarter of play, but it was the second quarter when the Saints put the game completely out of reach as they outscored Chamberlain-Hunt 22-4 for a 46-17 halftime lead.
Luke Murphy scored 16 points and Brennan Brante had 13 points to lead Chamberlain-Hunt.
River Oaks 61, Huntington 36
MONROE, La. — Vincent Moore led four River Oaks players with a game-high 17 points as the Mustangs rolled to a 25-point over the Huntington Hounds Tuesday night.
Tony Gilly, Clay Daniels and Casey Rahn each contributed with 11 points as River Oaks dominated Huntington in the first half en route to a 42-14 halftime lead.
Kevin Brown scored 11 points and Jeremiah Powell had 10 points to lead the Hounds, who fell to 3-4 on the season.
Monterey 49, Georgetown 34
MONTEREY, La. — The duo of Jacob Evans and Cade Crum combined for 28 points as the Monterey Wolves cruised to a 15-point win over the Georgetown Bulldogs Tuesday night.
Monterey led by 10 points at halftime and then pulled away by outscoring Georgetown 12-4 in the third quarter to open up an 18-point lead. Evans led all scorers with 17 points and Crum chipped in with 11 points.
