Cathedral blanks Loyd Star

NATCHEZ — The offensive attack of both the Cathedral School and the Loyd Star High School varsity girls soccer teams Thursday reflected the temperature outside — cold.
After managing just one goal in the first half, Cathedral missed several opportunities to score in the second half before finally sending one into the Lady Hornets’ goal with a little over three minutes left in regulation.
The Lady Green Wave’s defense, however, came through time and again, and Cathedral won in a 2-0 shutout.
“We played a good game,” Cathedral head coach David Gaude said. “I would have liked to put a few more in the net, but we did enough to win.
“We’ve been implementing some new things in practice. Our mid-field’s getting stronger. The big thing for us is finishing (games). It’s been Cathedral’s Achilles heel for a long time.”
Finishing wasn’t a problem for the Lady Green Wave tonight, as Madeline Christian added to a 1-0 lead late in the second half on a booming kick just inside the Loyd Star box.
“We needed that one,” Gaude said. “We would have liked to get some earlier, but you just have to keep on pressuring them (until you get one in).”
In the first half, Cathedral scored off a corner kick with about 19 minutes left in the half.
Madelein Christian kicked it in, to the middle of the box, and the ball bounced off another Cathedral player before Maddie Kirkwood sent it flying into the net.
“We kicked it to the center, then it deflected off of Marty Ellard and came at my feet,” Kirkwood said. “I set it up and sent it straight into the hole.”
Said Gaude, “We’ve been working on corner kicks in practice. As (our announcer) says, they’re the most dangerous kicks in soccer.”
Cathedral keeper Lacy Hall had the shutout.
The Lady Green Wave improved to 3-3 on the season, 2-0 in district play.
Cathedral Boys 2, Loyd Star 1
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Cathedral varsity boys fought back with two goals in the second half to get their eighth win of the season.
About nine minutes into the second half, the Green Wave’s Hunter Foster scored with an assist from Coal Mann. Austin Walker scored Cathedral’s second goal with about 12 minutes left in regualtion.
“It was a pretty hard-fought game,” Cathedral head coach Paul Burns said. “They had some speed and tried to move the ball up and down the field. Our defense did a good job containing them I thought.
“We had some chances (to score) in the first half but just didn’t finish. After we tied it up in the second half, it pumped our guys up. We were able to score that second goal and just ride the final 12 minutes out.”
Cathedral improved to 8-1 overall, 2-0 in district play. The Green Wave will play Saturday in the Brookhaven Tournament.
