BROOKHAVEN — The Cathedral Lady Green Wave went into the second quarter of their Region 7-1A game at West Lincoln trailing by just two points. But by the time halftime rolled around, they were staring at a 17-point deficit.

Whatever went wrong for Cathedral in the second quarter did go wrong. West Lincoln took advantage of missed shots, turnovers, and poor defense by scoring 19 points while Cathedral managed just four points in the Lady Bears’ 52-37 win.

“We had a letdown in the second quarter. That put a damper on things going into halftime,” Lady Green Wave head coach Bernita Dunbar said.

Letdown may be an understatement. The first quarter was competitive on both ends of the court and the Lady Bears led at the end of that quarter 12-10. The halftime score, however, was much different — West Lincoln 31, Cathedral 14.

With no shot clock in high school basketball, West Lincoln went to a different type of offense to make sure Cathedral would not get back in the ball game.

“They ran a four-corner offense in the third quarter and that made it difficult to get the ball back and score,” Dunbar said. “We played much better in the second half than in the first half.”

Ana Perry led Cathedral (7-11, 3-3) with 13 points and Epiphany Jackson scored nine points. Tatianna Marshall finished with a game-high 17 points while Katie Mullins had 10 points for West Lincoln.

Natchez High 62, Jim Hill 58

JACKSON — Earlier this month Natchez High head coach Sue Johnson said the fourth quarter was the main reason the Lady Bulldogs didn’t have a better record than they should have.

In many of their losses, they had squandered big leads by playing like they were trailing instead of being in the lead. On Friday night, the complete opposite happened and no one could have been happier or more shocked than Johnson.

Natchez High went into the fourth quarter trailing Jim Hill by 14 points. But the Lady Bulldogs went on a tear in the final eight minutes as they outscored the Lady Tigers 29-11 en route to a four-point win.

Jim Hill, the only team in Division 6-6A to have defeated Natchez High this season, led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter and then outscored the Lady Bulldogs 16-6 in the second quarter to take a 30-19 at halftime. The Lady Tigers added to their lead in the third quarter and it did not look like a comeback victory was not in the cards for the Lady Bulldogs.

That’s when Natchez High decided to be more aggressive on defense and started making shots on offense. Led by Keosha Bradley, Anastasia Hutchins and Ashley Minor, the Lady Bulldogs forced the Lady Tigers into numerous turnovers and contested shots. What followed was biggest come-from-behind win in Lady Bulldogs’ history.

Bradley led Natchez High (11-9, 4-1) with a game-high 15 points while Hutchins poured in 12 points and Minor had 11 points. Jim Hill was led by Jade Hooper with 13 points, Kierrariel Mitchell with 12 points and Deria Luckett with 11 points.

Ferriday 44, Farmerville 38

FERRIDAY — Farmerville rallied back from a seven-point deficit after one quarter of play to make it a one-point game, but Ferriday got its act together in the fourth quarter on its way to a six-point win Friday night.

It looked like the Lady Trojans were on their way to an easy victory after going up 13-6 at the end of the first quarter. But the Lady Farmers would not let that discourage them. The responded with some stellar defense in the second and third quarters and held the Lady Trojans to a combined 14 points over that 16-minute span.

The third quarter ended with Ferriday clinging to a one-point lead, 27-26. Led by Chante Poole, T’Keyah Fletcher and Keatrice Brown, the Lady Trojans outscored Farmerville 17-12 in the fourth quarter.

Poole led all scorers with 15 points while Fletcher scored 13 points and Brown added nine points. Ferriday improved to 14-8 overall and 3-1 in District 2-2A.

Raven Williams led Farmerville with 14 points while Nikki Hendricks chipped in with 10 points.

Franklin County 72, Tylertown 31

MEADVILLE — The Franklin County Lady Bulldogs had their way with the Tylertown Lady Chiefs through three quarters as the third-ranked team in Class 3A steamrolled its way to a 41-point win in Region 7-3A action Friday night.

Franklin County (14-2, 6-0) scored 23 points in both the first and second quarters en route to a commanding 46-13 halftime lead. The Lady Bulldogs didn’t let up in the third quarter as they outscored Tylertown 15-6 to take a 61-19 lead.

CeeCee Miller led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points while Vintrice Briggs had 12 points and Kierra Collins chipped in with 10 points. The Lady Chiefs were led by S. Youngblood with 13 points.

Rapides 50, Monterey 42

MONTEREY, La. — Just when it appeared that the Monterey Lady Wolves were on the verge of picking up a much-needed win in District 6-B, something happened along the way.

That something was the fourth quarter. Rapides’ offense caught fire in the final eight minutes and Monterey started to panic. The result was the Lady Mustangs outscoring the Lady Wolves 19-7 en route to an unbelievable eight-point win Friday night.

Monterey rallied from an early 14-12 deficit to take a 35-31 lead at the end of the third quarter. But the Lady Wolves could not keep the momentum going in the final eight minutes as they squandered a golden opportunity to get to the .500 mark in district play.

Fredricia Warren and Roshanda Davis had a lot to do with that. Warren led Rapides with 22 points while Davis ended up with 10 points.

Kristen Lipsey led Monterey (18-8, 1-3) with 10 points and Ariel Hector added nine points.

Silliman 52, Centreville 44

CLINTON, La. — Believe it or not, first place in MAIS District 5-AA was on the line Friday night between the Centreville Academy Lady Tigers and the Silliman Institute Lady Wildcats.

Despite having won just five games all season going into this game, Centreville was 4-2 in district play and, surprisingly, only one game behind Silliman. A win by the Lady Tigers would create all sorts of havoc going into the final week of the regular season. However, a win by the Lady Wildcats would give them the No. 1 seed in the district tournament that will take place at Silliman.

Centreville had a hard time getting shots to fall in the first half, leading to a 10-point halftime deficit that the Lady Tigers could not overcome in the second half as they lost by eight points.

Neither team played particularly well in the first quarter, but Silliman did enough to take an 8-3 lead. For the second straight quarter, Centreville failed to reach double digits in scoring and trailed the Lady Wildcats 21-11 at halftime. The Lady Tigers were down by 11 points after three quarters of play and even though they scored 19 points in the fourth quarter, it was not enough as the Lady Wildcats had 16 points in that quarter.

Sydney Sones led Silliman (13-9, 6-1) with 16 points while Holly Castello and Bradleigh Brignac each finished with 10 points. Centreville (5-17, 4-3) was led by Katie Berry with a game-high 27 points.

Central Private 36, WCCA 31

BAKER, La. — When one team holds another team to one point in the first quarter, that usually means a double-digit win is about to ensue. But that was not the case Friday night as the Central Private School Lady Rebels staged an unexpected come-from-behind win over the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams.

Central Private scored its only point of the opening quarter on a free throw and trailed WCCA 10-1. The Lady Rebels then started their comeback by outscoring the Lady Rams 11-7 and were down by just five points at halftime

In the third quarter, WCCA’s offense continued its offensive woes and scored just six points. Central Private cut the Lady Rams’ lead to two points heading into the fourth quarter. Then the Lady Rebels capped off their amazing victory with a 15-8 advantage.

Mary Claire Netterville and Caroline Walker led WCCA (8-13, 2-5) with 10 points each.
