CLINTON, La. — Taylor Welch scored 14 points and Rachel Hollowell had 13 points to lead the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels to a 46-40 win over the Centreville Lady Tigers Friday afternoon at the District 5-AA Tournament at Silliman Institute.
Even though ACCS, the No. 2 seed, won by six points in the first girls’ semifinal game, Lady Rebels head coach Melanie Hall said after the game was over that she didn’t expect the outcome to be as close as it was even though the two teams split the regular-season series.
“The girls worked hard. We’ve been having good practices this week, getting ready for this particular team,” Hall said. “We executed our game plan well. They left it all on the court and fought hard. As always, I give all the glory to God.”
The only player for third-seeded Centreville that ACCS could not stop was Katie Berry, who led all scorers with 21 points. Despite that, the Lady Rebels stepped up their defense in the second and third quarters to turn an early 12-10 deficit into a 34-24 lead.
Berry was only Lady Tigers’ player to score in double figures. The next high scorer for Centreville was Katie Vine with eight points.
“We played very well defensively. That was one of the things we worked on in practice,” Hall said.
ACCS (20-8) was also very patient on offense throughout the game and that was another thing Hall said the team worked on in practice. In addition to Welch and Hollowell having double-digit scoring performances, Marlee Wadsworth got in the act as she finished with 12 points.
“I’m very proud of that,” said Hall about having three players score in double figures. “We’ve been a whole lot more patient on offense. Looking for the high-percentage shot.”
ACCS, which automatically clinched a berth in next week’s Class AA South State Tournament will take on and No. 1 seed Silliman, a 39-26 winner over No. 5 Central Private in the other semifinal, today at 5:30 p.m. in the girls’ championship game. Centreville will take on Central Private today at 3 p.m. in the third-place game with the winner of that game moving on to South State while the loser will have its season come to an end.
Ferriday 70, Mangham 29
FERRIDAY — Any thoughts of the Ferriday Lady Trojans having a letdown at home against Mangham after their big win over Lake Providence on Tuesday night did not last very long.
Ferriday turned a close game into a rout by scoring 29 points in the second quarter as the Lady Trojans took care of the Lady Dragons Friday night in a District 2-2A game that kept them tied with Lake Providence atop the district standings.
“We played off that game tonight. Plus it was Senior Night,” Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron said. “We can breathe a little easier and play a little bit looser.”
The second quarter proved to be the turning point in the ball game. Ferriday went into that quarter leading 10-7. The Lady Trojans press defense was more effective than it was during the first quarter, allowing them to take easy transition baskets. Not only did they have one of their highest-scoring quarters all season, they also held Mangham to just nine points. The result was a 39-16 halftime lead.
Chante Poole led Ferriday (18-8, 6-1) with 23 points while Jasmine Butler added 16 points and T’Keyah Fletcher scored 14 points. If Ferriday wins at Farmerville next Tuesday night and Lake Providence wins its remaining district games, those two teams will be district co-champions. As to whether they will play a tiebreaker game again this season is up in the air.
“I don’t know how they’re going to do the tiebreaker this year,” Abron said. “This year we’re going by power points. We shouldn’t play a tiebreaker game this year.”
Trinity Episcopal 57, Tensas Academy 30
PORT GIBSON — Bethany Ogden and Madelyn Cross combined to score 35 points to lead the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints to a 27-point win over the Tensas Academy Lady Chiefs Friday afternoon at the District 6-A Tournament at Chamberlain-Hunt Academy.
The first of the two girls’ semifinal games was dominated by No. 2 seed Trinity Episcopal, especially in the first half. As the first quarter went on, it was obvious that Tensas Academy didn’t have a chance. In fact, the Lady Saints held the Lady Chiefs without a point and led 16-0 at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter was more of the same as Trinity Episcopal (20-8) outscored Tensas Academy 12-4 for a commanding 28-4 halftime lead. The good news for the Lady Chiefs was that the second half was a lot more competitive. However, the 24-point halftime deficit was way too much for them to overcome. Emma Arceneaux led Tensas Academy with nine points.
Ogden finished with 19 points and Cross had 16 points to lead Trinity Episcopal, which will take on the winner of the game between No. 4 seed Briarfield and No. 1 seed Tallulah Academy today at 6:30 p.m. in the championship game. The Lady Saints also clinched a spot in the MAIS Class A South State Tournament.
Tensas Academy, the No. 3 seed, will take on the loser of that game today at 4 p.m. in the third-place game with a South State berth going to the winner.
Natchez High 43, Brookhaven 29
BROOKHAVEN — Keosha Bradley ended up with a game-high 20 points as the Natchez High Lady Bulldogs won a low-scoring game over the Brookhaven Panthers Friday night.
Both teams struggled to get shots to fall in the first quarter, which ended with Natchez High (13-10) leading 6-5. While the Lady Bulldogs’ offensive production got better as the game went on, the same could not be said for Brookhaven. The Lady Panthers had only one double-digit-scoring quarter the entire game.
The Lady Bulldogs will take on Wingfield at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the Division 6-6A Tournament, which will take place at Natchez High.
Glenmora 34, Monterey 29
MONTEREY, La. —Even though Rachel Pecanty scored 12 points and Ariel Hector had 11 points for Monterey, Glenmora overcame a rough first quarter as the Lady Wildcats rallied to defeat the Lady Wolves in District 6-B action Friday night.
Glenmora scored just three points in the opening eight minutes and trailed by six points. Yet somehow Monterey (19-11, 2-6) could not keep Glenmora down very long. The Lady Wildcats got back in the game in the second quarter and fought back to take a 21-20 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Marquita Miles scored 11 points and Tonia Lear chipped in with nine points for Glenmora (18-16, 5-3).
