NATCHEZ — Now rotate your splits to the other side, the coach demanded.

“Not everyone can do that, switch a straight split from the forward side to the back without standing up,” Rebelettes Coach Dana Holland said.

Adams County Christian School’s dance team, the Rebelettes, have received a bid to go to the National Dance Alliance’s Nationals on March 6 and 7 in Orlando, Fla., at the Hard Rock Live Hotel.

“I’m so excited that I already packed,” 18-year-old Katie Hewitt said. “And it’s a week before we are flying there.”

To celebrate, the girls will show off their kick moves Tuesday night at ACCS’s multi- purpose room at 6 p.m., asking for a $2 donation at the door.

“Tuesday’s performance is when they show their skills to the community,” Holland said. “We know not everyone can make it to Orlando, and the girls want to show them what they are about.”

When Holland became the coach in March, she said she bargained with the Rebelettes — she would get them to Florida.

The crew’s senior captain, Hewitt, said now it was time for the Rebelettes to live up to their end of the bargain and make it to finals.

“Everyone was like, ‘You are so little, you’ll never get anywhere,’” Hewitt said. “But we have what it takes to go to nationals. We are the Rebelettes!”

To make it to the finals, the Rebelettes have to place in the final four of 14 teams in the small varsity kick division. The team will compete at 3 p.m. Saturday, and if they place, their performance will air on ESPN 2.

Natchez has not competed in a bid for the NDA finals since the 80s, when Natchez High went, Holland said.

“Once they get there, the girls will see that all the hard work is worth it,” Holland said. “They’ll know when they see all the teams and how big it is.”

The crew has been working every day since January, Hewitt said.

“We’ve worked so hard that we have almost killed each other,” Hewitt joked. “We went through so much, with people quitting, but we kept working to make it as a team.

“But we had fun while doing it; we still smiled while driving each other nuts.”

The Rebelettes started in March with 10 girls, but Holland said that number got weeded down to seven when some of the girls realized how much work it was.

“These are athletes,” she said. “They play basketball, baseball, and they all say this is more work.”

All seven girls also made the NDA All-Stars, which Holland said is a rare achievement because typically only a couple will make it.

“We may be small, but our hearts are mighty,” 17-year-old junior Peyton Carter said. “We want this.”

Holland said tryouts for next year’s Rebelletes will be March 26.
