JACKSON (AP) — An animal cruelty bill is on track to die under a Tuesday deadline in the Mississippi Legislature.

The bill passed the Senate with bipartisan support last month, then was sent for more work in two House committees — Agriculture and Judiciary B.

Tuesday is the last day for House and Senate committees to act on bills that have passed the opposite chamber.

The House Agriculture Committee is not scheduled to meet before Tuesday’s deadline, and that means the bill will be killed.

Under the proposed bill, torturing or maiming cats or dogs would become a felony.
