We know dogs make us smile, lower our blood pressure and improve our quality of life, but it seems the canines can also create a great sense of cooperation, too.

Unfortunately it’s not the lovable labs or cuddly cockers we are talking about this time.

Adams County has a vicious dog problem, and three local groups are working together to find a solution.

Spurred by the Adams County Board of Supervisors, a new committee with a board representative and members from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and Natchez-Adams County Humane Society are planning enforcement of a new ordinance.

If the plan gets approval, the sheriff’s office will respond to calls first, seeking a resolution with the pet’s owner. If no compromise can be met, the deputies can call a humane society representative for assistance in removing the animal.

The animal will be housed at the local humane society until it is rehabilitated for adoption or humanely killed.

It’s great to see the local lawmakers, the law enforcers and the folks with a heart for animals working together on this project. All three entities are needed, and we are glad the supervisors acknowledged this fact.

As the process moves forward, there may be kinks to work out, though, and we hope the canine cooperation continues for years to come.
