JONESVILLE — After a rough first inning, the Block Bears got to within one run of Franklin Parish before the Patriots pulled away thanks to five runs in the top of the seventh inning in a hard-fought 12-7 win Tuesday afternoon.

“We played in a tournament last weekend at Franklin Parish against 3A and 4A teams. We lost three games. My team is really improving every game. That’s why I play up to get ready for district,” Block head coach Stevie McCarthy said.

Block starting pitcher VaShawn Davis gave up six runs in the top of the first inning and it looked like the rout was on. But Davis settled down after that and held Class 4A Franklin Parish to just one run over the next five innings. Davis went the distance, allowing nine hits, striking out seven and walking three.

The Bears got back in the game by scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning, three in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 7-6 ball game.

Curdarius Johnson was instrumental in Block’s rally as he went 3-for-4 with a home run and five runs batted in. Unfortunately, that would not be quite enough as the Patriots took advantage of some untimely errors by the Bears in the top of the seventh to give them a 12-6 lead.

“We gave up six runs in the first inning and played well after that. They really showed me that they never give up. They fought until the last inning,” McCarthy said. “The last inning we had a couple of errors that cost us. We had two outs when they did all that damage.”

Steven Williams was the winning pitcher for Franklin Parish. He went four innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five and walking two.

Block dropped to 6-4 overall with all its losses against team from Class 3A and Class 4A. The Bears play at Class 3A Jena Saturday at 1 p.m.

Cathedral 13, Centreville 5

CENTREVILLE — For the second straight day, the Cathedral Green Wave took on a team from MAIS District 5-AA. But unlike their blowout win over WCCA on Monday, they had to rally from an early deficit to defeat the Centreville Tigers Tuesday night.

“I thought we swung the ball well tonight. Hopefully, we can carry that over to district play, which starts next week,” Green Wave head coach Craig Beesley said.

Cathedral (8-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Centreville responded by scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning and four in the bottom of the third for a 5-2 lead.

However, any thoughts of the Tigers pulling off an upset over the Green Wave ended quickly.

Cathedral began its rally by scoring four runs in the top of the fourth inning that would give the Green Wave the lead for good at 6-5. They added three more runs in the top of the fifth for a 9-5 lead.

“That was one thing we were glad to see. We got behind and then we strung some runs together in the fourth and fifth innings and that gave us the lead back,” Beesley said.

Cathedral scored four runs in the top of the seventh to finish the scoring. Centreville, on the other hand, did not score a single run after the third inning

The Green Wave had 13 hits in the game and was led by Tyler Ballard, who went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Collin Hammons and Caleb Johnson also hit home runs while Daniel Huffines had a triple.

Cathedral opens up Region 7-1A action next Tuesday at Bogue Chitto with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.

Silliman 7, ACCS 2

CLINTON, La. — The one concern Adams County Christian head coach Hunter McKeivier had about his team going into this season was defense.

On Friday night against MAIS District 5-AA foe Silliman Institute, that concern became reality as the Rebels committed five errors to lose to the Wildcats and drop their first district game of the season.

Silliman broke a scoreless ball game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Wildcats continued to hit the ball hard and when they weren’t getting base hits, they were forcing the Rebels into defensive miscues during the middle three innings.

ACCS (8-4, 3-1) didn’t get on the scoreboard until the top of the fourth when the Rebels scored one run off winning pitcher Corbin Barnes. However, the Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth to give them a commanding 7-1 lead.

Barnes held the Rebels to just two runs on five hits while the defense behind him committed no errors. Ty Overland had a double and Cody Donez went 2-for-3 to lead Silliman.

Johnny Smith led ACCS at the plate by going 2-for-3 and Christopher Perry had a double.

ACCS hosts Silliman for a key varsity doubleheader on Friday afternoon beginning at 4:30 p.m.
