NATCHEZ — Coming off a disappointing home loss to Franklin County last week, the Cathedral Lady Wave needed a solid performance to get back on the winning track.

And thanks to a dominating pitching performance from Mollie Devening and timely hitting, the Wave were able to do just that in a 10-1 win over Vicksburg.

Devening started off a little slowly, but got stronger as the game went on, retiring the final seven batters she faced in order.

Devening pitched the first six innings, allowing just one hit and striking out nine batters.

“I always get better after pitching for awhile,” Devening said. “The team played great defense behind me.”

Ginny Daggett pitched the last inning, retiring Vicksburg in order, with two strikeouts.

Cathedral coach Gary Blackwell was just as pleased with his offense as he with his offense as the pitching and defense, as the Lady Wave racked up 10 runs on nine hits, including a three-run home run by Betsy Daggett in the bottom of the fifth.

“It took a little while to get going, but we hit the ball real well tonight,” Blackwell said. “I’m glad to see our bats back.

Blackwell said the team performed well in all aspects of the game, which is why they were able to put up a big victory in improving to 5-2 on the season.

“Overall, I thought we played a well-rounded game, defensively, offensively and running the bases,” Blackwell said. “It’s good to get back on the winning side after the Franklin County game.”

While Cathedral wound up winning the game in a blowout, the game started off slowly for the Lady Wave.

Vicksburg loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, but Devening was able to induce a groundout to end the inning with no runs scoring.

Cathedral opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Betsy Daggett walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch.

Cathedral added two more runs in the second inning. The first scored on a RBI groundout by Betsy Daggett, who finished the game with four RBIs, while the second was brought home on a Kimble Devening single.

Each team scored an unearned run in the fourth inning before the Wave broke the game open with four runs in the fifth.

Beth Fortenbery scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch before Daggett laced a line drive down the first base line into the corner that went for a three-run inside-the-park home run, making the score 8-1.

Cathedral got its final two runs in the sixth inning when Ginny Daggett scored on an error and Fortenbery brought home another run with a groundout.

Devening said Tuesday’s victory was just what the team needed after last week’s loss to Franklin County.

“We made a bunch of errors in that game that cost us,” Devening said. “It’s good to come back and pick up a good win.”
