NATCHEZ — More than 100 people will have the opportunity to relive a fond childhood memory while contributing to a good cause Saturday.

Twelve teams have registered for the first-ever Kick for a Cause kickball tournament at 10 a.m. at Duncan Park. Tournament proceeds will benefit the Guardian Shelter, which provides assistance to domestic violence victims.

Registration is $100 per team, and each team must have 10 members, including a minimum of two women. Team members must be at least 13 years old.

The tournament is the brainchild of Leadership Natchez 2010 and the Council for Recreation, and Leadership Natchez Spokesman Tate Hobdy invites the public to attend the family-friendly event.

“A lot of other cities have kickball leagues and we thought (the tournament) was a good idea,” Hobdy said. “We didn’t anticipate getting this good of a response.”

Though the registration deadline was Monday, Hobdy said two more teams can register before the tournament.

“We’re capping it at 14 (teams), otherwise we’ll be out there until 10 at night,” Hobdy said.

Hobdy said teams will play at the top of the hour for 45 minutes. Spectators can enjoy the games while feasting on all you can eat food and beverages for $10 per person.

Hobdy said the Guardian Shelter was chosen as the tournament’s beneficiary because of its contributions to an 11-county area.

Guardian Shelter Director Donna Miller said she is grateful to Leadership Natchez and the Miss-Lou community for its continued support.

“We are extremely excited to have the interest of Leadership Natchez in our program,” Miller said. “Economic times continue to be difficult, and grant monies are being cut almost routinely, so community involvement is now more important than ever.”
