NATCHEZ — ACCS’ Christopher Perry needed one swing of the bat to change the story.

With his team trailing 9-7 in the bottom of the seventh, he connected on a 3-run home run to give ACCS a 10-9 walk-off win in the second game of a doubleheader against Silliman Friday.

The bomb capped off a comeback in which ACCS trailed 9-4 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Even though his team was feeling down after getting blown out in game one, Rebels head coach Hunter McKievier has said several times before that his team is never out of it until the game’s over.

“That proved very true tonight,” McKievier said. “I’m extremely proud of these kids. After what happened in the first game, we were down pretty bad until the last two innings, but we were able to scratch off six runs and come back and beat them.”

ACCS scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and had runners on first and second for Perry with just one out in the seventh.

“We were in a good situation, having two on with either Perry coming up, or (Jake) Brumield coming up behind him,” McKievier said. “I felt confident that not just those two, but anyone on the team could come through at any time.”

Brumfield got the win after relieving starter Brandon Sanders.

“Sanders did a heck of a job,” McKievier said. “We got into trouble with mental errors, and when his pitch count got high, we put Jake in.”

Brumfield was 4-for-4 at the plate, and Perry finished 4-for-5. Johnny Smith went 2-for-4.

Silliman 17, ACCS 3

Errors and missed opportunities at the plate were the story in game one.

Although the scorekeeper officially gave ACCS just three errors, McKievier said he counted about seven botched plays by his defense.

“Errors and hits did us in,” McKievier said. “They were able to put the ball in play and pressure us, and we kicked it around. We didn’t take advantage of opportunities at the plate, and any day you have seven errors, it’s going to be a long day for you.”

ACCS starter Johnny Smith lasted just 1/3 of an inning, surrendering three runs before Christopher Perry relieved him with two men on.

Perry proceeded to walk the next batter, and Ty Overland connected with a grand slam to put Silliman up 7-0 in the first.

“You can’t get frustrated with (taking your starter out early),” McKievier said. “We were facing a good hitting team, and he didn’t have his best stuff today. That’s not a knock on him, as he’s pitched well for us so far this season. He just didn’t have it today.”

ACCS surrendered at least one run each inning before the game was called after the fourth. The Rebels scored one run in the bottom of the first when Bryce Murray crossed home plate on a groundout by Smith. They scored two more in the second inning when Murray singled in Tanner Martin and Perry doubled in Murray.

Murray finished 2-for-3 with a double for ACCS, and Perry went 2-for-3 with two doubles.

The Rebels (9-5, 4-2) will play against Copiah Monday.
