TERRY — The good news for Natchez High was pitcher Derrian Johnson held Terry to just five hits.

The bad news was his defense gave him no support, committing numerous errors in a 10-0 loss to one of the top teams in Class 6A.

Natchez coach Charlie Williams said the Bulldogs committed so many errors, he lost count after seven.

“Derrian didn’t pitch a bad game. We didn’t help him defensively,” Williams said. “It’s a lack of focus. That’s all there is. We made errors on three fly balls that should’ve been outs. We’ve got to improve our defense. The game should’ve been 0-0 and we should still be playing.”

Williams pitched 3 1/3 innings before being relieved by Scott Turner for the final one-plus innings. On the other hand, Terry pitcher Michael Manley pitched five innings of shutout ball and held Natchez High (6-7, 2-2) to just four hits.

Terry scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, two in the bottom of the second and one in the bottom of the third off Johnson, but most of those were unearned runs. With Turner on the mound, Terry was shut out in the fourth inning, but came right back to score three in the bottom of the fifth to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Turner was the only bright spot for Natchez High at the plate as he went 2-for-3.

Monterey 13, Harrisonburg 3

MONTEREY — Ross Lipsey limited Harrisonburg to just two hits and the Monterey Wolves used a five-run rally in the bottom of the third inning to defeat the Bulldogs in six innings Tuesday afternoon in District 6-B action.

Had it not been for three Monterey errors, Harrisonburg (0-4 in district play) probably would have not scored a single run in this game. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but they did not score again until the top of the sixth.

Monterey (6-7, 4-1) was held scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. That’s when the Wolves exploded for five runs off losing pitcher Jesse Vinson. The Wolves added one run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth for a commanding 8-1 lead.

After Harrisonburg scored its two runs in the top of the sixth to make it an 8-3 game, Monterey put an end to the game by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the 10-run mercy rule into effect. Dillion Smith went 3-for-4 and Hunter Frey was 2-for-4 to lead the Wolves at the plate.

Silliman 16, WCCA 2

WOODVILLE — The 2010 baseball season is one that Wilkinson County Christian Academy head coach Ray Olive would like to forget. Tuesday night’s home finale against District 5-AA opponent Silliman Institute was a prime example of that.

On Senior Night, the Rams committed eight errors and had just four hits in a blowout loss to the Wildcats to remain winless in district play with two games to go for them in 5-AA.

WCCA (1-16, 0-10) watched Silliman score 10 runs over the first three innngs. It wasn’t until the bottom of the third inning that the Rams finally scored their first run of the game. However, with the way the Wildcats were hitting the ball, this game was not going to last much longer.

Silliman (3-4 in district play) put up six runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 16-1 lead. WCCA scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, but it needed to score a lot more to keep the game going.

Austin Amphion went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple and Cody Donez was 3-for-4 to lead Silliman, which had 10 hits in the game. Corbin Barnes was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits with just one going for extra bases – a triple by Hayden Whetstone.
