FERRIDAY — A Ferriday man is dead and another one was arrested and charged with murder following a brutal shooting late Saturday night.

A second person was charged as an accessory after the fact to the killing.

Ferriday police responded to the call at 10:23 p.m., where they found Reginald Green, 25, dead in a Chevrolet SUV parked in front of 803 Alabama Ave.

He had been shot repeatedly in the torso, head and mouth with a .223-caliber assault rifle, Assistant Police Chief Johnny Evans said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The killing was apparently related to a dispute about money, Evans said.

Three other people — who Evans declined to identify but said were adults — were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting, but were not injured.

After initial investigation, Bryant LaKeith Bethley, 35, of 126 Lee Tyler Road was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, three counts attempted first-degree murder and parole violation.

Bethley was arrested shortly after 2 a.m. at a Clayton residence, and Derrick Dewayne Bates, 29, 738 Louisiana 573, St. Joseph, was charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder because he was also at the residence. Bates was reportedly hiding when officers arrived.

While officers were able to recover several spent shell casings on the scene and several live ammunition rounds from the suspect’s vehicle, Evans said as of Sunday afternoon they had not recovered the weapon used in the slaying.

Bethley was on parole for an armed robbery conviction, Evans said.

The matter is still under investigation, and Evans said he expects further arrests.

Bates was also booked on a bench warrant for criminal damage to property, resisting an officer and flight from an officer.

Both men were detained without bond Sunday.

The 800 block of Alabama Avenue was the scene of a non-fatal shooting early Friday morning, as well.
