NATCHEZ — The last time ACCS pitcher Jake Brumfield credited a parent, it was his mother.

After a strong performance against Central Private Friday, however, dad was the one who received the accolades.

After losing 9-4 in game one of Friday’s doubleheader, Brumfield played the role of stopper on the mound, and clutch hitter in the batter’s box, as ACCS rolled to a 7-1 victory. Brumfield held Central Private to just one hit in seven innings, and had a huge three-run home run in the fifth inning that gave the Rebels a nice cushion.

“Dad helped me through everything,” Brumfield said. “I’ve been in a slump these last few games. Everything was either caught or called strike three, and he stayed with me afterwards working with me.”

In the top of the fifth, ACCS led just 2-1, and Central Private had just scored the run in the top half of the inning. Bryce Murray led the inning off with a walk, and Christopher Perry was hit by a pitch, bringing Brumfield up to the plate and setting up his big blast.

“(The home run) was a big confidence booster,” he said. “It put us farther ahead and gave us confidence that we could play with this No. 1 team in AA.”

ACCS head coach Hunter McKeivier said Brumfield’s competitive nature gives him confidence every time he sends Brumfield to the mound.

“Jake’s a competitor,” McKeivier said. “Regardless of who we’re playing or the situation, he’s going to get out on the mound and give it everything he has and compete every time.”

After game one’s loss, McKeivier said the win in game two was needed badly, especially since it was senior night at ACCS.

“We wanted to send the seniors our on a high note, and what’s a higher note than winning against one of the top teams in MAIS?” McKeivier said. “Central Private is a good, well-coached team, and I give my kids all the credit. They stayed, fought hard and competed non-stop.”

ACCS scored in the top of the first on an RBI single by Johnny Smith. In the fourth inning, Collin Dollar doubled in Smith from third.

After Brumfield’s home run in the fifth, Landon Givens tacked on a run with an RBI single that scored Brandon Sanders.

ACCS scored another insurance run in the seventh inning when Sanders drove in Bryce Murray on a single.

Game one was a different story for ACCS, as the Rebels stranded too many baserunners, McKeivier said.

“We left 12 men on, and it’s tough to win on a day like that,” McKeivier said.

“There were times where our approach at the plate was not good at all, and it seemed like we didn’t understand we even had an approach. When they got runners on, they got the timely hits, and we didn’t.”

ACCS (11-12, 6-6) will play at Brookhaven Academy next Friday.
