FERRIDAY — A fourth man joined the growing list of people arrested in connection with a brutal Holy Saturday slaying on Alabama Avenue.

The latest suspect arrested, Daniel D. Butler, 28, 359 Doty Road, is the second to be charged with first-degree murder in connection with the April 3 shooting of Reginald Green.

Butler was allegedly in the same vehicle as Bryant LaKeith Bethley — the first person arrested in the incident and the alleged gunman — at the time of the shooting, Ferriday Police Investigator Dennis Cowan said.

Butler was initially booked late Friday evening on charges of obstruction of justice because he had allegedly tried to destroy evidence associated with the case, Cowan said.

The murder charges were filed against Butler after he had been incarcerated for two days.

The killing was reportedly linked to what investigators at the time of the slaying characterized as a dispute about money — accusations had reportedly been made between the victim and the alleged killer about a theft.

The dispute ended when Green, who was sitting in a parked SUV in the 800 block of Alabama Avenue, was shot numerous times in the torso and head with a .223-caliber assault rifle.

Three other people were in the vehicle, but were not injured. In addition to the murder charge stemming from Green’s death, Bethley was charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder.

When police arrested Bethley early Easter morning at a Clayton residence, they also found Derrick Dewayne Bates, 29, who was reportedly hiding when the officers arrived. Bates was charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.

A fourth arrest, executed April 8, placed Andreas M. Cauley, 34, behind bars on charges of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder and obstruction of justice.

Cowan said Cauley allegedly threw the rifle used in the killing into Black Bayou, but agents with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries were able to recover the weapon April 7.

Ferriday Police Chief Kenneth Hedrick said he believed Butler’s arrest would be the final arrest in the case, but that it remains under investigation.
