HAMMOND, La. — The Cathedral Green Wave knew they faced an uphill battle when they traveled to Hammond, La., to take on St. Stanislaus, the top ranked team in Class 4A.

And even though they lost the game, the Green Wave acquitted themselves well in a 6-1 loss to the Rock-a-chaws.

After getting down 4-1 in the bottom of the first innings, Cathedral played St. Stanislaus almost dead even the remaining six innings of the game.

“We had a shaky start in the first inning,” Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said. “We settled down after that and I thought we played real well. I thought Dylan (White) did a good job for us after he settled down. He started hitting his spots.”

Unfortunately, White wasn’t able to finish the game as both he and Daniel Huffines were injured when they collided chasing a soft line drive by second base.

“They both dove and hit headfirst,” Beesley said. “It was a pretty good collision. They’re both in the hospital. Dylan will need stitches and they both probably have a concussion. We hope to have them back for the playoffs.”

White pitched a good game for Cathedral, but his performance paled in comparison to St. Stanislaus starter Boomer Scarborough, who allowed one run on just five hits.

Aaron White was the highlight for the Cathedral offense, as he was 2 for 3 at the plate.

“We know we saw the best pitcher we’re going to see for the rest of the year,” Beesley said. “He’s a legit Division I prospect, and has signed with Southern Miss already. He’s one of the best pitchers I’ve ever faced as a coach.”

Cathedral (15-4) will finish its regular season Saturday against Natchez High before beginning the Class 1A playoffs on April 30.
