Perhaps the best news for Natchez this week was no news at all. The line of storms that moved through the state causing major damage, many injuries and 10 deaths elsewhere had little effect in Natchez.

Though our thoughts and prayers are with those hurting in our state, we are glad Adams County dodged this bullet.

But other good news greeted our community earlier in the week. Let’s review a few great headlines:

– Natchez High School honored 45 student standouts Friday at its annual honors breakfast. The event recognized students who are all-around good citizens.

Special congratulations go to junior Charles Chatman who was named the student of the year.

– Eric Schiele has taken his love for art to HBO and been rewarded. The Ferriday native’s artwork is being used by the cable channel’s TV show “Treme.”

– Natchez and the local Rotary Club played host to five visitors from Italy last week. The visitors are part of a Rotary exchange program. When our community takes an opportunity to learn from others, we’ll all win.

– The Festival of Music’s educational program is in town, and local students have already had an earful of something new — opera. The show goes on the road this week to surrounding communities. Even though the children don’t often like the sound of such a different style of music, the exposure to the arts will teach them in ways they don’t even imagine.

We are lucky to have the group each year.
