NATCHEZ — An alliance responsible for spearheading several community projects wants to replenish its membership.

The Community Alliance will host a membership meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Bowie’s Tavern, City of Natchez Community Development Director Darlene Jones said.

“(The alliance) is geared toward improving the community and talking about community issues,” Jones said. “If you have issues, this is the place you can get them out.”

Established in 2002, the alliance brings together community leaders, organizations and individuals to yield results for ongoing projects.

Former alliance Chairman and City Engineer David Gardner said members meet to brainstorm ideas and exchange information with one another.

The regular communication prevents duplication of project efforts and presents opportunities for organizations to work in partnership.

“It seemed like our community was going in different directions, and the alliance was created to coordinate everything as a one stop,” Gardner said. “We’re trying to get everyone to work off of the same sheet.”

Past alliance projects include the planting of magnolia trees along U.S. 61 north and south of Natchez, the completion of Madison Street park and the restoration of the veterans memorial at Memorial Park.

Gardner hopes the alliance will adopt the “Christmas in Natchez — City of Lights” project this year.

Wednesday, the alliance will elect new officers and address other housekeeping issues. Gardner said the alliance has met infrequently over past two years, and the need for rejuvenation is long overdue. Both Gardner and Jones said there is no membership fee to join the alliance.
