FERRIDAY — Ferriday High School has yet to interview candidates for its head football coach vacancy, but that process should begin in the near future.

Ferriday principal Michelle Bethea said she’s waiting for the Parish school district office to forward her applications for potential candidates. Ferriday is looking to replace former coach Freddie Harrison, who resigned in March to take the head coaching position at Washington-Marion High School.

“As soon as the central office forwards those to me, the interview process will begin,” Bethea said.

“Right now, there’s no timetable for that to happen, but I expect it as soon as possible. This is the end of the year, so we’re just trying to wrap up school and get our seniors graduated.”

Bethea reiterated she’s looking for someone who can do more than simply coach children on the field.

“We’re looking for someone who has the educational welfare of our students first and foremost on their minds,” Bethea said.

“We’re looking for someone who will set a positive example for our students in the classroom and on the field. And, of course, we’re looking for someone who can keep our winning tradition alive.”

In the meantime, Bethea said assistant principal James Davis is running the Trojans’ offseason workout in the absence of a head coach.

“Our players are troopers,” Bethea said. “James Davis is stepping in and keeping things going until we get someone, and I also plan to include him in the interview process.

“I’m sure they haven’t missed a beat. Mr. Davis is very reliable and dependable, and I know he knows the game. We’re Trojans — we’ll survive, but I think (the players’) spirits are fine.”

Whoever Ferriday ends up hiring, there are several challenges that await him when he steps into the position.

“Keeping the tradition and momentum going will probably be the biggest thing,” Bethea said. “The community, as well as myself, we have certain expectations set for our children academically and sports-wise.

“Also, just trying to create a name for themselves, and something that’s unique to that specific coach, I’m sure will be very challenging.”
