NATCHEZ — Local letter carriers want to make it easy for you to make a difference this Saturday.

Postal employees are once again participating the “Stamp out Hunger” food drive across the country and in Adams County.

Any city or county resident can put non-perishable food items — no glass — by their mailbox before the mail runs Saturday.

Letter carriers will pick up the food items for distribution to local non-profit agencies.

Benefiting agencies include the Guardian Shelter, the Stewpot and the Sunshine Shelter, postal carrier Frank Patti said.

The local drive typically collects approximately 9,000 pounds of food.

Nationally, “Stamp out Hunger” has occurred on the second Saturday in May for 17 years. In 2009, a record 73.4 million pounds of food was collected.

Though the Vidalia Post Office doesn’t actively promote the drive, letter carriers in the city will collect any cans that are left by mailboxes.
