BROOKHAVEN — Coming off a big win on Tuesday afternoon in Game 1, the Centreville Academy Tigers needed to win just one game Thursday to win the MAIS Class AA South State Championship series.
There was just one problem — they took on a top-ranked Brookhaven Academy Cougars team that was probably not in a good mood after a stunning 11-1 loss in six innings in which ace pitcher Tripp Jolly was roughed up and lasted just four innings.
Yet for some reason, it looked like Centreville was the team in which all the pressure was on and not Brookhaven Academy. And it showed big time in Game 2 as the Cougars rolled to a 12-2 win in just five innings. Then in the third and deciding game of the series Thursday night, Brookhaven Academy held on for a 5-3 win.
Centreville Academy, the No. 4 team in Class AA and District 5-AA runner-up, finished with an overall record of 22-11.
