NATCHEZ — The Judge George W. Armstrong Library will officially unveil its new look during an open house from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

“We’ll be giving tours of the library all day long,” Library Director Susan Cassagne said.

The library closed March 13 to replace carpeting damaged by Hurricane Gustav. Approximately 50,000 books were boxed and stored before the new carpeting was installed.

Library staff and volunteers worked to reinstall shelving and organize book titles. Some touch-up paintwork was also completed.

The library reopened March 29.

At 2 p.m. Tuesday, library staff and the administrative board of trustees will dedicate its former periodical room as the Dr. Clifford Tillman Memorial Reading Room, Cassagne said.

Tillman, who died last year at age 89, was instrumental in making the library what is today, Cassagne said.

“(The open house) is our way to celebrate our new look and commemorate the dedication of Dr. Tillman to this library and to Natchez,” Cassagne said.

Cassagne said the Tillman family is traveling from Atlanta to attend the dedication. Refreshments will be served.

Cassagne said dedication is open to the public, and the library has invited Mayor Jake Middleton, the Natchez Board of Alderman, the Adams County Board of Supervisors, Mississippi Library Commission Director Sharman Smith and MLC consultants to attend.
