NATCHEZ — If the Cathedral girls track team is any indication, success in one sport translates to another one.

The Lady Wave 100- and 200-meter relay team is undefeated in all five track meets it’s competed in this year — and three of the four members are softball players.

Betsy Daggett, Ginny Daggett and McKenzie Milligan, who all play softball for the Lady Wave, make up the team, along with Ana Perry. Because of the team’s success, they will get a chance to compete for the MSHAA Class 1A state championship Friday at Pearl High School.

“McKenzie is the newcomer of the group,” Cathedral track coach Josh Loy said. “All the other three made it to state last year. She’s only a seventh grader, but she’s really stepped in for us.

“With three of the four members having made state last year, I feel great about them this Friday and their opportunity to win a state championship.”

With softball being Milligan and the Daggett sisters’ other spring sport, Loy said it’s definitely been a challenge for them to balance both.

“There have been many days where I’ve had one or two girls out at practice, and the rest of them were doing softball,” Loy said.

“It’s been a challenge, but they’ve done a great job handling it. They were successful in softball this year, winning the district championship, and that’s definitely carried over onto the track as well.”

As for the boys, senior Charles Lee was the lone one to qualify for the state meet after his performance at South State this past Saturday.

“He has a chance to win three state titles in the long jump, triple jump and 200-meter dash,” Loy said. “He has a great shot in all three, and he’s undefeated in the long jump this year, so he’s a contender for sure.”

And Loy said Lee would love nothing more than to add a state championship to his track resume.

“Charles wasn’t with us last year, because he was at Jefferson County, but he came back to Cathedral for his senior year,” Loy said. “He’s really carried the boys track program this year, and has been a star at every track meet. He’s done everything I’ve asked him to do, and he deserves to be where he is right now.

“He’s run track ever since seventh grade I think, and has never won a state championship, so I’m sure that’s in the back of his mind. Not only does he have a chance, but he has a chance in three events, and that would really set off his career.”

Standing in everyone’s way will be a North division that is filled with talent, Loy said.

“I know the North has historically been very strong in 1A, just by looking at their times, and I don’t expect it to be any different this year,” Loy said. “But we’ve seen good competition at all of our meets this year, so I feel confident. I think we’re in shape, and that we’ll lay it all on the line and have a great day.”

Field events at the state championship start at 12 p.m. Friday, and all running events start at 3 p.m.

“It’s going to be a long day,” Loy joked.
