PEARL — The Cathedral track team had high hopes of bringing home gold at the state track meet Friday.

However, due to some stiff compoetition from the northern half of the state, the Cathedral Lady Wave track team had to settle for fourth place.

Many members of the girls’ team saw their times improve and in the case of lone boys’ representative Charles Lee, his performance in the triple jump was better. However, the overall results were not as good.

All seven members of Cathedral’s girls’ team advanced to the State meet while Lee was the only member of its boys’ team to advance as far.

Against the likes of Myrtle and Houlka, the Lady Green Wave track team finished in fourth place overall with 27 points.

“I’m extremely pleased with how they did. We didn’t win any state championships, but we had a couple of state runner-ups,” coach Josh Loy said. “I think the future is bright for the girls’ team.”

Pepper Taylor took more than 14 seconds off her time in the 1600-meter run from what it was at South State with a time of 6:09.11. Yet on this day that would only be good enough for a third-place finish. She was second in this event at South State.

Ginny Daggett finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 49.52 seconds. McKenzie Milligan wound up fifth in the 200-meter dash in 27.27 seconds.

The girls’ 4×200-meter relay team of Betsy Daggett, Ana Perry, Ginny Daggett and McKenzie Milligan, coming off a win in this event at South State, finished second place with a time of 1:50.25.

The same four girls ran the 4×100-meter relay and finished in fourth place with a time of 52.27 seconds.

Betsy Daggett finished in second place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.5. She took nearly three seconds off her time at South State.

“I’m proud of Betsy Daggett. She’s the only senior on the girls’ team. She had two state runner-ups in the 4×200 relay and the 400-meter dash,” Loy said. “We improved several of our times. Even though we didn’t win any state championships, our times did go down. That’s a testament to how hard they worked all year.”

Lee did better in the triple jump than he did six days earlier with a jump of 42 feet, 5.5 inches. But he finished in the same position he did in South State, third place.

In the long jump, the same event he finished first in at South State, he finished fourth at State with a jump of 20 feet, 7.5 inches. His day came to an end when he tore his hamstring in the 200-meter dash.

“Charles Lee carried the boys program for us today. He was the only one who qualified for State,” Loy said. “I know he’s disappointed with his injury in the 200-meter dash.”

Things didn’t go too well for the girls’ 4×400-meter relay team of Ebony Tenner, Milligan, Taylor, and Kimble Devening as they finished in eighth place with a time of 5:09.44.
