VIDALIA — Vehicular homicide charges followed a Sunday motorcycle-versus-truck accident that claimed the life of a Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy.

Deputy John Mott Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on Louisiana 568 at Louisiana 900. Mott, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, has been employed with the CPSO since April 2007.

The Louisiana State Police investigated the accident and arrested Joseph L. Drummer, 30, 731 Bell Grove Circle, Vidalia, on charges of DWI (third offense), vehicular homicide, improper left turn, driving under suspension, open container, DWI with an accident and possession of marijuana.

Drummer’s passenger, Shawn J. McCarty, 32, 193 Stephens Road, Vidalia, was also arrested in charges of possession of marijuana.

According to a news release from the LSP, Drummer — who was eastbound on Louisiana 568 — reportedly executed a left turn toward Louisiana 900 in front of Mott’s westbound motorcycle.

Drummer and McCarty were uninjured in the accident.

Concordia Parish Sheriff Randy Maxwell responded to the accident Monday, saying that Mott’s death was a loss for both the community and the sheriff’s office.

“John Mott was an exceptionally good deputy and a good man who was devoted to his family,” Maxwell said.

“Law enforcement is one big family, and we certainly are that at the CPSO. I’m just asking everyone for their prayers — especially for his family, but also for our staff and the entire community.”

In addition to his tenure at the CPSO, Mott had previous experience with law enforcement agencies in Louisiana and Mississippi. He was 41.

Bond for McCarty was set at $700, while Drummer was detained without bond Monday afternoon.

The investigation is ongoing and routine toxicology reports are pending.
