VIDALIA — Two alleged scammers worked their way through the Miss-Lou recently, selling what they said were dinner plates to benefit a dying child.

Though accounts vary, the story is similar to the one Mary Jenkins was told last Friday.

A couple who said they were from Liberty came in to Jordan Carriers late last Friday and said they were selling fish plates for $7.50 to raise funds for a 14-year-old boy with terminal cancer, Jenkins said.

The company bought 45 plates and were told they would be delivered between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. Thursday, but when the time rolled around, the plates weren’t delivered.

Jenkins said she wants to warn others of the scam.

“I gave them the benefit of the doubt, but this is definitely going to make me leery,” she said.

The scammers didn’t just stay on the Mississippi side of the river, either.

Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Kathleen Stevens said that the CPSO was investigating the matter as well.

The scammers reportedly told the businesses that a Natchez restaurant would fry the fish, and several Concordia Parish businesses contacted the CPSO when the plates were not delivered.
