Sibley Zydeco Festival set for June 26

Growing up as a child, I always loved music.

My grandmother bought me an organ, and my dad bought me a guitar. I never learned to play them well, because we couldn’t afford a teacher.

But as I got older, I met some of the best friends in music that anyone could ever meet.

In junior high, I met Kelvin Butler, James Berry and Kelvin Jones. We later founded The Combustion Band in the 1980s. But I left, and my friend for life, the Rev. Melvin White, joined the band. That was the best thing that could happen to the band.

I won numerous talent shows for singing and dancing, so I decided to go out on my own. I went from a singer to a rapper called 6 Pac. I did well at the time, but I was getting older.

Now, I can truly say God has blessed me with another talent — writing songs. Mr. Theodis Ealey gave me my first chance with a song I wrote in 15 minutes.

So, on this Father’s Day, my message is to parents: Don’t ever doubt your child’s dreams.

God put everyone here for a purpose.

Children don’t give up on your dreams. No matter how many people may put you down.

It’s your dream.

My dream is slowly coming true. With my new album done and circulating the area, I want to thank everyone who supported me and encourage everyone out there with an interest in music.

We would love to see all those interested in music at the Sibley Zydeco Festival on June 26.

Gregory Jones is a local musician.
