NATCHEZ — With one team having two eagles in its final round and another making a hard charge, Wesley Rogers and Kevin Smith Jr. probably realized that they were going to need at least one eagle of their own to hold off the competition.

And thanks to an eagle on No. 18 early Sunday afternoon, their second in as many days on that hole, Rogers and Smith Jr. shot a 12-under-par 60 for a two-day score of 119 to win the championship flight of the 2010 Whalrest-Jackson Elks Lodge Scramble at Beau Pré Country Club.

“We played good. We didn’t make as many putts as we did (Saturday). We got lucky, too. I holed out from 99 yards for eagle on No. 2,” Rogers said. “I struggled a little bit on the back but did just enough to win.”

Just enough, indeed. While they expected to get some pressure from the teams like Christian Krueger and Jason Rooks as well as Bill Lambert and Joel Dupre’, the one team that made things quite interesting was that of Kurt Russ and Casey Ham.

Russ and Ham, who started their round on No. 4, began the day five shots out of the lead after a disappointing and surprising 8-under-par on Saturday. On Sunday, however, the putts were dropping for the duo as the fired a tournament-best 15-under-par 57 for a two-day score of 121. Yet that turned out to be good enough for third place.

“We had a good round. We finally made some putts. Instead of burning the lips, they finally went in,” Ham said. “We had a run of 10 birdies in a row starting on No. 5. We were surprised we shot 64 (Saturday). They put on a good tournament — Mr. (Tom) Matthews, Mr. (Tom) Bryant and their staff.”

The team of Russ and Ham lost a scorecard playoff to the team of Krueger and Rooks, who shot a 12-under-par 60 to finish with a two-day score of 121.

“He (Rooks) hit the ball well and I putted good,” Krueger said. “We had eagles on 8 and 18. Jason hit the approach shot to about five feet on both holes and I made the putts. We played good. We missed a (birdie) putt on No. 1 from eight feet. That was the first putt we missed all weekend from that length. Overall it was a great tournament. We enjoyed it very much.

The team of Lambert and Dupre’ had to settle for fourth place despite a final-round 60 of its own for a two-day score of 122.

“Kept the ball on the green and made a few putts. We had an eagle on No. 8 and 10 birdies,” Lambert said. “We hit the ball about the same (as Saturday).”

The team of Kevin Smith Sr. and Woody Allen won he first flight after shooting a final-round score of 10-under-par 62 for a two-day score of 127.

“Thank you to Kevin Smith (Sr.),” Allen said. “We shot 10-under and he made eight of the 10 birdie putts. It was fun to watch. Him making his putts and Kurt and Casey making theirs, it was a birdie barrage.

Bobby Meason and Eddie Burks won the second flight in a scorecard playoff over Dwayne and Louie Brown. The Meason-Burks team had a final-round 67 to finish at 137 while the Browns had a final-round 68 to put them at 137.

Doug and Buie Brown shot a final-round 70 to finish with a two-day score of 142 to win the third flight.
