VIDALIA — It was two hours of power for the Concordia Dixie Youth 12-year-old All-Stars Saturday night.

The Concordia 12s rode two home runs by Cole Cangemi and one by Chandler Grayson en route to a 12-2 win in five innings against the Catahoula 12s in the first game of the Sub District 5 tournament.

Despite the big win, Concordia head coach Whest Shirley said he would have liked to see more consistency from his hitters.

“We came out flat, and weren’t hitting the ball. We had a couple of timely hits by Cole and Chandler with the home runs, but I wasn’t impressed with our performance (overall),” Whest Shirley said.

“Our pitching has to be better, and we just have to hit better. Hopefully it was just first-game jitters, and it’s now behind us.”

Concordia got things started early, when Cangemi tallied his first home run off Catahoula starter Quan O’Steen with Jake Barlow on base. Two more runs scored when O’Steen walked in Kade Passman and Grayson.

Catahoula scored its only two runs in the top of the third inning, when Passman was put on the mound to pitch, and proceeded to walk in two batters before ending the inning.

In the bottom of the third, Cangemi got his second two-run home run of the game, scoring Pate Shirley. Passman also scored that inning when Grayson singled him in, making it 7-2 Concordia after three.

Concordia finished things off in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five more runs, which was highlighted by Grayson’s two-run shot that scored Passman. The game was then called due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Pate Shirley got the win for Concordia, surrendering no runs in two innings.
