ALEXANDRIA — A Ferriday woman was sentenced Thursday to two years in prison for embezzling $110,848 in Veteran’s Affair’s pension benefits.

U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walter handed down the sentence against Fontaine C. Gremillion, 60, in federal court in Alexandria. He also fined her $50,000 and ordered Gremillion to serve 320 hours of community service once she completes her time in prison.

Gremillion pleaded guilty to the charges against her in January. The U.S. Attorney’s office had accused her of failing to report her father’s full income when she filed for his VA pension benefits in 1999 when she had power of attorney for him.

VA pensions are determined in part by the veteran’s annual income.

Fontaine Gremillion is the wife of retired appellate judge Glenn Gremillion and mother of third circuit court of appeals judge Shannon Gremillion.
