NATCHEZ — The Natchez Dixie Youth 12-year-old All-Stars wanted to make sure their final game at Duncan Park was a winning one.

And thanks to home runs from Skeeter Myles and Tyler Wilson and fantastic pitching from Christopher White, Natchez did just that, beating Wesson 2-1 to win the District 6 championship.

“This was the kids’ last game on this field, and I wanted them to be champions,” Natchez coach Terry Moffett said. “The kids have been playing out here since they were 5 or 6 years old, and it’s special that they closed it out the way they did.”

White, who allowed only three hits and one run in the victory, said winning his final game at Duncan Park was a great feeling.

“It feels good to know that our last game here was successful,” White said. “And on top of that we won the district championship.”

Natchez defeated Wesson 16-0 in game one of the best-of-three series Thursday night, but Friday’s second game was nothing like the first.

Natchez had only three hits in the game, but two of them were solo home runs.

Myles gave Natchez a 1-0 lead with a shot in the first inning and Wilson led off the second with a homer to put Natchez up 2-0.

Natchez would get no hits after the second inning, but two runs was all White would need.

Wesson scored its only run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Colby Porter but White pitched out of trouble by getting a strikeout to end the inning with runners on second and third.

White then retired the final six batters of the game in order.

White’s performance was typical of the great pitching Natchez has had throughout the sub-district and district games.

In six games, Natchez has allowed a total of four runs and pitched three shutouts.

“We work on pitching real hard in practice and the kids have responded,” Moffett said. “They are throwing the ball in good spots and trusting the defense behind them, and that’s what you want.”

White had a slim margin for error the entire game, with Natchez never having more than a two-run lead, but said he never let the pressure get to him.

“I just had to bear down and throw strikes,” White said. “You never let the other team see you down.”

Both teams advance to the Dixie Youth South State tournament, which begins July 16 in Magee, but Natchez will be the top seed in its half of the bracket thanks to the district championship.
