NATCHEZ — From Monday onward, shoppers at Sports Center will forever be witnesses to Vidalia High School’s accomplishments in basketball this season.
At 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sports Center will hang the jersey of guard Torrey Dixon in commemoration of the LHSAA Class 3A State Champion Vidalia Vikings. The jersey will be a member of the store’s Wall of Champions, which honors local state championship teams in all sports.
“This is a great honor. It shows that all my hard work paid off,” Dixon said.
“They’ll know that I was a good player that played well with my team, and that we accomplished something special.”
Clarence Bowlin, who originally came up with the idea for a Wall of Champions at Sports Center, said he was happy to see another local team get recognition.
“It’s great. They put in time and effort, and it worked out very well for them. It’s always great to have teams show up and do well at the state level,” Bowlin said.
And Bowlin pointed to the state championship as a reason to support recreation in the Miss-Lou.
“A lot of good people put their time and energy into helping develop kids into good athletes, and they don’t get paid for it,” Bowlin said.
“If you don’t have recreation, they’d be out on the streets doing things they shouldn’t.”
