NATCHEZ — Torrey Dixon has a lot of memories of his senior season at Vidalia High School, and he can now be reminded of those memories every time he visits Sports Center.

The Vidalia guard’s No. 22 jersey is the latest addition to the store’s Wall of Champions, which honors state championships won by schools in the Miss-Lou in any sport.

The jersey honors Vidalia’s LHSAA Class 3A basketball championship, and Dixon said seeing his jersey hanging on the wall stirs up positive emotions for him.

“It’s all about memories. When I come back and see it, it reminds me of how our team won the state championship,” Dixon said.

“It reminds me of what kind of player I was, and how well we played together as a team.”

Even so, Dixon also said there’s a bit of sadness stirred up in him when he sees the jersey as well.

“It’s a little sad, because it was my first big championship, and we won it with a good group of guys that have been playing together for a long time,” Dixon said.

“It’s hard, knowing that I won’t be able to play with them again. At the same time, there’s a lot of satisfaction seeing up, and I’m really happy and honored it’s up there.”

When Vidalia fans look up at Dixon’s No. 22 when visiting the store, Dixon said he hopes they remember a player who was a hard worker more than anything else.

“I want (Vidalia fans) to remember me as a good team player that loved the team and loved to play,” he said.

“I want them to remember me as someone who gave it his all, even when we played a team I knew we’d beat by 40 or more points.”

Ray Simpson, who sells gear to Vidalia High School for Sports Center, said it’s also nice for him to see Dixon’s jersey hanging on the wall.

“It’s very rewarding seeing stuff that I sold put on the wall,” Simpson said.

“It’s rewarding for me to see stuff I sold out on the field, but the most rewarding thing is going on the campuses and having the kids come up to me and say hello. It’s all about the kids.”

And when Dixon has children of his own, he said he plans to bring them to Sports Center for them to see his jersey hanging.

“If it’s still standing, I do plan to bring my kids and wife to see it. I want to show them what their father and husband accomplished while in high school,” he said.
