NATCHEZ — Those hoping to get a deal on back to school clothing may have their chance Friday and Saturday.

Natchez is participating in the statewide sales tax holiday. Customers buying clothes and shoes will not have to pay the regular 7 cent sales tax. Only items costing $100 or less are eligible.

Accessories such as jewelry, handbags, wallets, watches, backpacks, and similar items do not qualify. Cleats and items worn in conjunction with an athletic or recreational activity are other sample items not eligible. School supplies and computers are not included.

The holiday is the second for Mississippi. The same tax-free weekend was this time last year.

Local stores are gearing up for high sales by stocking back-to-school clothing.

“We are excited about it and have a good selection of clothes and shoes,” Stage Manager Blaine Davis said. “Last year we exceeded our expectations with sales.”

Becky Adams, a Sports Center employee, said the store would be ready this weekend.

“We have all of the school colors, have plenty of khakis, got new jumpers and skirts for the girls and we have tights this year,” Adams said. “We have everything clothing wise you will need to go back to school.”

In the mall, Sammy Abuhakmeh said Sammy’s would be participating and would have some items on clearance as well as the school uniforms.

“We have all school colors, and we keep uniforms at a low price year round,” Abuhakmeh said.

Natchez Mayor Jake Middleton said the tax-free weekend was a win-win for everyone.

“Personally, I think it is great for the citizens of the Miss-Lou,” Middleton said. “It gives the shoppers a little bit of a break.”

Middleton said he hoped it would also be good for the stores.

“It will hopefully increase their sales and help them for the latter part of the year,” Middleton said.

Davis said he was personally looking forward to seeing the Miss-Lou come shop.

“Hopefully we will have good weather and people will come out to shop and support their local businesses,” Davis said.

In Louisiana, the tax free holiday is scheduled for Aug. 6 and 7.
