FERRIDAY — Nicotine cravings can make people do crazy things, and four teens’ apparent lust for tobacco products landed them behind bars Thursday.

At approximately 3 a.m. Thursday, Taunton’s Ferriday Superette at 801 Louisiana Ave., was burglarized.

The alleged burglars gained entry into the business by breaking a small window in the front of the building, Ferriday Assistant Chief Johnny Evans said.

While there, the burglars stole a large but undetermined amount of cigarettes, cigars and alcoholic beverages, he said.

Police were able to identify the suspects after the mother of one of the suspects found some of the alleged stolen goods at her home, and — after confronting her son — called the police, Evans said.

Donterrius Jamal Weatherspoon, 18, 27739 Louisiana 15, Ferriday, was arrested Thursday on charges of burglary of a business and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

Two others — Craig M. Jones, 17, 705 Carolina Ave., Ferriday, and Johnnie C. Washington Jr., 18, 617 Georgia Ave., Ferriday — were also arrested on charges of simple burglary and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. No bond set.

A 15-year-old juvenile was also booked in the incident.

The police were able to recover some of the stolen merchandise, Evans said.

All of the suspects, including the juvenile, remained in custody Friday.

No bond has been set for Weatherspoon, Jones or Washington.
