Mother Nature brought a nasty lemon to the Miss-Lou this week — 90-plus temperatures — but like always someone in this community made lemonade, literally.

Mae Holyoak and her friends Sophie Webber, Alexandra Person and Madison Delaney were certainly the highlight of the hot week, quenching our thirst and warming our hearts all at once. The young girls set up their third annual lemonade stand and donated the $1,716.48 in proceeds to the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society. The giving spirit of these girls should inspire us all.

But let’s review a few other things you might have missed if you hid where the air conditioner blows.

Neighbors in the Minor Street area headed outdoors for the annual Minorville Jubilee. This street party is a celebration of a tight-knit community interested in cleaning up their streets and watching out for friends and family.

The Natchez Food & Wine Festival filled stomachs and agendas all weekend. This event is a great one for tourists and locals and we thank all those who work so hard to organize it.

Copiah-Lincoln Community College is expecting to see a 4-percent increase in enrollment when fall classes start this month. Continued growth at this school is wonderful for our community.

The recreation commission has worked with the National Park Service to secure land for the proposed recreation complex. Thanks should go to this group of volunteers for their work.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office hosted a women’s self-defense class this week, helping local residents take a bit better care of themselves.

A few area schools will start this week, signaling the end of summer vacation. We wish a great year to all students and teachers.
