NATCHEZ — A Lorman man apparently found himself in a situation Monday morning that required him to get out of his car, fast.

And he allegedly did just that without bothering to stop the car, which was in the middle of traffic at a busy intersection.

Natchez-Adams Chamber of Commerce President Debbie Hudson was a passenger in a vehicle at the intersection of U.S. 61, D’Evereux Drive and Lynda Lee Drive at the time of the incident, approximately 9 a.m.

She saw a black Ford Mustang pull out of a business on the right side of the road on D’Evereux Drive. The car was in the wrong lane, headed into oncoming traffic, and the driving was erratic at best, Hudson said.

“The car is going crazy, it is in a lane, out a lane, then in the median, up on top of the median and then down off the median,” she said.

“I looked at (the driver in the car) Lauren and said, “Stay as far over as you can, that guy is crazy.”

Suddenly, the driver jumped out of the moving car, his pants around his knees, Hudson said.

“He ran across the boulevard, into traffic, and I don’t think he had any shoes on,” Hudson said.

“He took off running toward Walmart, and it looked like he was almost trying to stop other cars.”

The abandoned car continued into traffic, veering and hitting a car in the turning lane.

The driverless car came to a stop after it struck the other vehicle, and a Natchez police official said no injuries were reported from the incident.

The police were later able to arrest Brandon Hayes, 28, 7205 Red Leak Road, Lorman, on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest, DUI (other substance), and disorderly conduct (disobeying a law enforcement officer) in connection with the incident, officials said.

He was released Monday on a $2,342 bond.
