After a week of bad news — a bank robbery, flooding and two arrested police officers — there is no better time to sit back and give notice to the good things that happened in our community.

Bad news always spreads faster than the good stuff; but it’s important to realize there is always more good than bad.

– Natchez-Adams School District students performed better than last year in many categories on their statewide testing. Teachers and students connected to last year’s fourth-grade math classes deserve special accolades for jumping 25 percentage points and surpassing the state average in math.

– Cathedral student Lara Biglane is on the right track to a career in medicine. Biglane attended National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in San Francisco this summer and was inspired to keeping working toward her dreams.

– Sales tax revenues in the City of Natchez are up again. A slight increase in car sales is helping the local economy.

– Natchez Water Works is using stimulus dollars the right way, by creating an environmentally friendly way to convert toxic sludge into a product that can be sold.

-A group of locals came together this weekend to raise money for the Sunshine Children’s Center. The center lost a significant grant recently, and these volunteers organized a softball tournament to assist the non-profit agency. They raised more than $3,000.

– Community members came together for a great lunch and a great fundraiser Friday at the annual United Way Jambalaya cook-off. This fun local event gets the ball rolling on the United Way campaign each year.

So even though we may remember the bad headlines most, the good news is there and deserves recognition.
