VICKSBURG — Thursday afternoon’s non-district game between the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints and the Porter’s Chapel Lady Eagles was not exactly your typical fast-pitch softball game.

For starters, Trinity Episcopal had several young players participating in a varsity game for the first time. That alone should have given Porter’s Chapel a golden opportunity to make short work of the Lady Saints.

And it looked like that was exactly going to happen after the Lady Eagles jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. However, the Lady Saints got over those early-inning jitters by scoring 19 runs over a span of two innings and ended up with a 19-6 win in just four innings.

As for having that early deficit and not scoring until the top of the third inning, Trinity head coach Chris Hutchins said, “They came out playing pretty well. We had to play with a bunch of young girls tonight. It took a little while for them to get accustomed to the varsity level.”

Among those in the starting lineup for Trinity were three seventh-graders, one eighth-grader and two ninth-graders as well as junior Katie Steele, who pitched all four innings and allowed only five hits in the game despite the rough first inning.

“Once they got over the initial anxiety, they performed really well,” Hutchins said. “We were able to absorb the initial punch by Porter’s Chapel, gather ourselves and were able to perform at a high level for the remainder of the game.”

Indeed they did. The Lady Saints took the lead for good by scoring nine runs in the top of the third. But they weren’t even close to being done as they put up 10 runs just an inning later. The two big hits were a three-run triple by Caitlyn Upton and a two-run double by Ashleigh Williams, who threw a no-hitter in the junior varsity game. Porter’s Chapel helped out some by committing six errors

The Lady Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but it was not nearly enough to keep the game going.

Christina Givens went 2-for-5 and Mallory Lancaster was 2-for-4 as the Lady Saints finished with 12 hits in the game.

Trinity Episcopal (4-6) hosts Tensas Academy in the MAIS District 6-A opener next Monday. The varsity game starts at 5 p.m. and will be followed by the JV game at 6:30 p.m.

WCCA 4, Oak Forest 3

AMITE, La. — Oak Forest was looking to end a two-game losing streak as the Lady Yellow Jackets hosted the Wilkinson County Christian Lady Rams Thursday afternoon.

Instead, WCCA’s Bethany Fletcher limited Oak Forest to just two hits – the second straight game Oak Forest has had that many hits – while Lauren Dejean and Caroline Walker had key run-scoring hits in the top of the sixth inning as the Lady Rams held on for the win.

Fletcher went the distance for the Lady Rams in picking up the win. She struck out just two, but she walked only two.

WCCA (8-4) scored one run in each of the first two innings before Oak Forest responded with one run in the bottom of the second inning and another run in the bottom of the fifth. However, the Lady Rams put up two runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Dejean, who went 2-for-2, and an RBI single by Walker, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the game.

Oak Forest (14-4) scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to trail 4-3, but Fletcher shut the door on the Lady Yellow Jackets to get out of the inning and pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh. Their only hits were doubles by Sydney Smith and Katilyn Cooksey.

WCCA will be playing in the Parklane Academy Tournament Saturday. In its pool, WCCA will play Bowling Green at 9:30 a.m., Centreville Academy at 11 a.m. and Oak Forest at 2 p.m. All three of those games will be at the McComb Sports Park.
