Jefferson County uses 281 rushing yards to win

PORT GIBSON — Robert Wells and Kiwaski Tenner combined for 281 yards rushing and four touchdowns as Jefferson County avenged last year’s loss to Port Gibson with a 34-22 win over the Blue Waves Friday night.
“It was a hard-fought battle. We jumped on them 16-0. Then we went to sleep like we did last year (a 24-12 loss after taking an early 12-0 lead). But we were better prepared this year,” Tigers head coach James Herrington said.
And it helped that Jefferson County (1-1) ran the ball a lot better than it did when the two teams played each other at Fayette a year ago. Wells finished with 150 yards and two touchdowns while Tenner added 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
“I’ve got to tip my hat to the offensive line. We were able to run the ball effectively,” Herrington said.
Herrington also credited the defense for stepping up and being more aggressive, especially in the second half.
“The defense also played well. We gave up a few big plays early, but down the stretch they came up big and made some big stops,” Herrington said.
Jefferson County takes to the road again next Friday when the Tigers play at Crystal Springs. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Wilkinson County 49, Raymond 7
WOODVILLE — Two teams looking for their first win of the season took to the field Friday night as Wilkinson County hosted Raymond. And the Wildcats would prevail in convincing fashion to go to 1-1 on the season.
Wilkinson County plays at Prentiss next Friday at 7:30 p.m. in what will be the first of four straight road games for the Wildcats.
