Trinity hosts Porter’s Chapel for homecoming

NATCHEZ — Trinity coach David King is well aware of the potential distractions of homecoming week, but he said he doesn’t expect that to be an issue tonight.

“Monday through Wednesday the weather was really nice for us, and we’ve had a good week of practice. We look to be much better this week,” King said.

“Homecomings are a distraction, but that’s no excuse because we coaches put up with it. After the first play, those distractions are over. It should be a good game, and it’ll be nice seeing an even bigger crowd in the stands, and seeing the homecoming court.”

The Saints will host Porter’s Chapel out of Vicksburg, and King said he’s expecting a well-coached opponent.

“Their coach, John Weaver, is a good friend of mine who came over from Tallulah Academy. He’s done a great job so far, and those kids are playing hard for them. They’ve had a tough schedule off the bat,” King said.

The Saints will have to account for a spread attack from Porter’s Chapel, and King said his players would once again have to match speed for speed.

“They have a couple of new kids that transferred from Warren Central that are good backs for them. Team speed is their strength,” King said.

Despite a 57-20 win against Alpha Christian on the road last Friday, King said after the game he wasn’t happy with his team’s lack of preparation.

“We had a tough physical game with Centreville Academy (the week before), and we just didn’t do a good job as coaches of preparing them,” King said.

“You’re going to have those kinds of weeks. We just didn’t get better last week in practices or in the game, so we challenged our kids this week to change that.

But with last week now in the past, King said he’s looking for his Saints to make a strong showing at homecoming.

“Coach Weaver is going to have those kids ready to play. We’re just excited about putting last week behind us and getting better as a team,” he said.

Kickoff at Trinity is set for 7 tonight.
