NATCHEZ — Adams Country Christian School displayed a magnificent ground game Friday night against Prairie View Academy, who displayed a ferocious ground attack themselves.
But it was the Rebels’ attack that won out, as ACCS took care of Prairie View 42-25.
The game was a tale of Brandons. Brandon Sanders for ACCS had a game-high 23 carries for 199 yards and four scores while Brandon Goodson of PVA ran 16 times for 179 and three scores.
Sanders often seemed unstoppable, busting three runs of 25 yards or more for touchdowns while breaking multiple tackles along the way.
“Brandon is a hard runner. He’s explosive. The guys work hard to block for him because they know he will hit the hole,” Hayles said. Chris Perry contributed to Sanders’ success with great blocking at the fullback position.
Perry also ran the ball well for the Rebels.
While Sanders was making plays on offense, the Rebel defense had a hard time stopping the PVA ground game led by Goodson.
Goodson was a force to be reckoned with in the first half, ripping off huge runs and putting up the first points of the game after an ACCS punt.
ACCS would follow with a 52-yard touchdown pass from Zach Day to Daniel Guedon. ACCS, however, failed to convert the extra point.
Goodson scored again in the second quarter for PVA while Sanderson scored twice. Sanders’ scores gave ACCS the lead 20-13. PVA would answer just before the half with a score by Chris Blakely, who seemed as explosive as Goodson.
The Blakely score gave the Spartans new life but they trailed the Rebels 20-19 at halftime.
As the homecoming queen was announced during the half time break, Coach Hayles adjusted his defense in order to stop Brandon Goodson of PVA.
Hayles’s adjustments did not show, however, as the first play from scrimmage in the second half for PVA was a touchdown run of 52 yards by none other than Goodson. Goodson’s run put the Spartans up 25-20.
Hayles’s defense would settle down after giving up the huge play by shutting down Goodson. After his big play, he was held to just five more carries for 17 yards by the aggressive Rebel defense.
At one point, Goodson was injured by a host of Rebels on a play in which he fumbled the ball. ACCS recovered the fumble, one of their three takeaways in the second half.
ACCS established a drive of its own that featured much of Rusty Blackwell. Blackwell had two consecutive runs of 15 yards before punching it in from three yards out, extending the Rebels’ lead to 28-25.
From there, ACCS never looked back, adding another Sanders touchdown run after a Spartan fumble, followed by another Sanders run after a Cory Emanuel interception. ACCS gathered all momentum in the second half with their great defensive play.
“It’s all about assignments. The first half we didn’t follow our assignments. The second half we adjusted,” Hayles said.
The adjustments paid off forcing three Spartan turnovers and multiple punts in the second half. The great second half by the Rebels pushed their record to 5-0, the first time that has happened since 1982.
