CHICAGO — The Alcorn State defense had all the fun two weeks ago against Langston, scoring three touchdowns.

So Saturday against Mississippi Valley State in the Chicago Football Classic, the Braves special teams decided they would get in on the action.

Alcorn scored two special teams touchdowns in the first quarter to jump out to an early 14-0 lead and never looked back in a 27-9 victory over the Delta Devils.

Alcorn true freshman quarterback Brandon Bridge also had a great game, coming off the bench to throw for 127 yards and a touchdown and rush for another 67 yards.

But it was the special teams that got things going for the Braves early in the game.

After Valley was forced to punt on its first possession, Natchez native Edward Johnson received the punt at Alcorn’s 30-yard line and raced 70 yards for a touchdown to put the Braves up 7-0.

The Delta Devils went three and out on their next possession and didn’t have any better luck on the punt, as the Braves blocked it and Jacque Caldwell recovered it in the end zone to give the Braves a 14-0 lead.

Alcorn extended its lead in the second quarter, as Bridge led a 55-yard scoring drive, which was highlighted by a 33-yard pass to Johnson that put the ball on the 1-yard line.

Bridge found Johnson in the end zone on the very next play for another score, and Alcorn led 21-0 at halftime.

Mississippi Valley finally got on the board in the third quarter on a 23-yard field goal by Carlos Sanchez, but Alcorn State answered right back with a 65-yard scoring drive.

A 36-yard pass from Bridge to Simon Collier put the ball on the Delta Devils 4-yard line, and Gabriel Nash scored two plays later on a one-yard run to make the score 27-3.

Valley had the only score of the fourth quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run by Christopher Watkins, but the Braves defense didn’t let the Delta Devils get any closer.

Nash led the Braves in rushing with 81 yards on 20 carries, while Collier had three catches for 66 yards and Johnson had three catches for 42 yards and a touchdown.

Alcorn’s victory was its fourth consecutive against Mississippi Valley State.

The Braves (2-0, 1-0 SWAC) return home to Jack Spinks Stadium next Saturday to take on Alabama State. Kickoff will be at 4 p.m.
