St. Andrews takes Beau Pré Cup

NATCHEZ — The final results of the 2010 Beau Pré Cup may have been Team St. Andrews with a commanding victory over Team Carnoustie, 16.5 points to 11.5 points, but Sunday afternoon’s singles matches were very competitive.

Several of the one-on-one matches at Beau Pré Country Club went down to the final couple of holes with only one ending real early. And as Team St. Andrews captain Woody Allen put it, that’s how they should have been.

“It’s a good day. It’s a fun event with everybody playing with a lot of friends. Carnoustie had a lot of good players and we were lucky to pull it out. The matches were a lot closer than the (final) score indicates. After 12 holes, the teams were basically even.”

Team St. Andrews ended up with 9.5 points to just 4 ½ points when the singles matches were all over. A far cry from Day 1 on Sautrday, which ended with both teams in a 7-7 tie – a first in the event’s 11-year history.

The Cup-clinching match was Robin Punches’ win over Chad Huber. And that was after St. Andrews had already won six matches while Carnoustie had won just four matches and the match between St. Andrews’ Chris Kelley and Carnoustie’s Billy Ulmer finished all square with each team gaining one-half of a point.

“Came up a little short. They played too well today,” Team Carnoustie captain Lloyd Trisler said.

After Punches’ closeout win, St. Andrews gained two more points when Craig Bradford defeated Mark Carter Jr. and Keith Rayborn got past Mike Cook.

In addition to his win over Team Carnoustie’s Wesley Rogers, Kevin Smith Jr. of Team St. Andrews had a hole-in-one during their match. That took place on the par-3 13th hole from 181 yards out with a 5-iron. In addition to Rogers, Jordan Farmer and Stephen Hollingsworth were the other witnesses.

“It bounced about two or three feet from the hole and rolled in from there,” Smith Jr. said.

As to when he realized it was a hole-in-one and what his reaction was, Smith Jr. said, “After it went in the hole. Gave a bunch of high fives.

As for his match against Rogers, Smith Jr. said, “We had a good match all day. It went back and forth. I had the lead. He had the lead. I chipped in on 10 to go 2-up. Then I had the hole-in-one to go 3-up. I parred 14 to go 4-up. Won 15 to put him away. Me and Wesley are real good friends.”

Smith Jr.’s win over Rogers was big for St. Andrews because it gave the eventual Beau Pré Cup-winning team 6 ½ points while Carnoustie had just 3 ½ points. And that was after Jordan Farmer, assistant captain for Team Carnoustie, defeated Stephen Hollingsworth and before Carnoustie’s Bill Lambert edged past St. Andrews’ Joel Dupre’.

Jody Helbling set the tone for Team St. Andrews when he defeated Al Conn of Team Carnoustie.
