CENTREVILLE — For the first time in its school’s history, Centreville Academy took on a public school team, but the change wasn’t hard to manage.
After having a tough time slowing down Fisher High School quarterback Britt Robeaux in the first quarter, the Tigers seized control of the game by scoring 23 points in the second quarter as they went to defeat the Tigers 37-18 Friday night.
The Tigers took the lead with 5:49 left in the opening quarter when J.T. Doughty ran in from 5 yards out and Cliff Hurst added the extra point. However, the Gators responded just over two minutes later when Robeaux connected with Tevyn Goggins on a 30-yard touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion run was no good and Fisher High went into the second quarter with a surprising 12-7 lead.
Centreville (5-4) cut the lead to 12-9 when Robeaux was sacked in the end zone for a safety with 7:24 to go in the second quarter and right after the ensuing free kick, the Tigers took the lead for good when Hurst scored on a 39-yard run. His extra point made it a 16-12 lead.
In fact, it was the ground game that was all of Centreville’s offense with 385 total rushing yards. Hurst led the way with nine carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns while Randy Bell had seven carries for 78 yards. Doughty had seven carries for 53 yards and one touchdown.
Fisher High (3-4) was marching down the field and was deep in Centreville territory on its next drive until Colton Terrell picked off a pass by Robeuax and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 23-12 lead with 5:39 remaining until halftime.
Then with 2:06 left in the first half, Hurst scored on a 5-yard run as the Tigers led 30-12 at halftime. Terrell, who had eight carries for 57 yards, put them up 37-12 on a 3-yard run with 10:38 left in the game and Robeaux scored on a 3-yard run with just under 2:00 to go.
Robeaux completed 9 of 13 passes for 148 yards, but he was also intercepted three times. In addition to Terrell’s pick-6, Jake Darden and Alex Felder each had an interception. Tyler Towles led the Tigers’ defense with 10 tackles.
Central Private 34, WCCA 6
WOODVILLE — Because of its unusual schedule, Wilkinson County Christian School hosted MAIS District 5-AA opponent Central Private School for homecoming.
That didn’t turn out to be a wise move as the Rebels had their way with the Rams Friday night and in the process clinched a spot in the Class AA South State Playoffs.
Seth Stevens scored on a 14-yard run with 10:29 to go in the second quarter and he threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Moak on 4th and 27 from the Rams 40-yard line with 29 seconds to go in the opening quarter for a 14-7 lead at halftime.
Troy Lowe returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter 76 yards untouched and right down the middle for a touchdown to give the Rebels a 21-6 lead. Then with 2 seconds left in the quarter, Ryan Bowman scored on a 9-yard run as Central Private (5-4, 3-0) had a 27-6 advantage.
The Rams (2-6, 0-3) were held to two first downs and 58 yards of total offense. Hall and Tramel McKinsey went a combined 1-for-9 passing with each throwing an interception.
