NATCHEZ — This weekend, the Duncan Park golf course will host its annual Seniors and Ladies City Championship golf tournament.
Tee times fall between 8 and 11 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday. Approximately 40 people have already signed up, and Duncan Park Golf Course Superintendent Greg Brooking said slots are still available.
The tournament will be divided up into four age groups: the seniors division, ages 50 to 59; the super seniors, ages 60 to 69; the legends, ages 70 and above; and the ladies championship.
“Normally we don’t have a lot in the ladies bracket, but this year we have eight signed up,” Brooking said.
“We’re tickled, because there aren’t a lot of lady golfers in town. The ladies bracket is open to all ladies, no matter what age group.”
Brooking said each seniors bracket would have different flights, so that the men can compete against players of similar caliber. He also said the tees would be further up the fairway, and that the courses would player shorter.
Although Duncan Park usually tries to reach out to the younger generation, Brooking said it’s also important to get the older generation out to the golf course.
“A lot of times older people don’t have anything to do, and we can bring them out here and introduce them to a sport where you can play well into your 80s,” Brooking said.
“This gives us the opportunity to reach out to people who can’t play their favorite sports anymore and say, ‘Hey, want to play another sport? Here’s one.’”
Entry fees for the tournament are $50. For more information, call Brooking at 601-248-4913.
