NATCHEZ — Longwood is often an attraction for tourists and Natchez natives due to its history, but Saturday its attraction will be a bit on the creepy side.

The Pilgrimage Garden Club and Catholic Youth Organization are teaming up to create a Halloween carnival on the Longwood grounds.

The event will feature a haunted house and scary hay rides for the children, as well as carnival-like games and more.

The Longwood grounds are already decorated from the front gate to the house.

The money raised by the PGC will go toward the restoration of Longwood, and the CYO’s money will help fund a trip to Madrid, Spain for World Youth Day in August.

“Our main focus to restore the house is painting the dome,” project chairman and PGC member Emily Carpenter said.

The Longwood Halloween Carnival was popular in the 1980s, but eventually ended. Four years ago, Carpenter and co-chairman Gina Cauthen restored the tradition that now attracts wide audiences.

The carnival will have many games for the children, such as football toss and baseball throwing games. Children will be able to decorate pumpkins, have their fortune told by a witch and even sing karaoke.

“Wear your costume and (photographer) Erin Delaney will take your picture with a Longwood backdrop,” Cauthen said.

There will be a tailgate tent for the adults complete with college football games on several televisions.

“Generous donations have allowed us to enhance our decorations and activities this year,” Cauthen said.

The carnival will open at 4 p.m. Saturday and last until 8 p.m. Admission is $3 for children and $5 for adults. Parking for the carnival will be at the Abundant Life Church.
